Everyone knows Las Vegas, Nevada is the gambling capital of the world. But even if you're not a big gambler, there's plenty to do in Las Vegas. Pretty much anything you enjoy, Las Vegas has it in excess and much of it is even free.

Las Vegas is in the southern tip of Nevada and can be accessed by several major roads. It's not far from I-40 and I-15 goes right through it.

This is also a central location for much of Nevada's desert heat. The landscape around Nevada is bleak and barren though there are several mountain ranges on the horizon. The city itself gets very hot during the day but cools off slightly at night.

Even a far distance from the city, you can see its skyscrapers and intriguing architecture during the day and the city's lights can be seen from great distances day or night. When you come into the city, especially if one of your first destinations is the famous “Strip” or Las Vegas Boulevard, you'll see bright flashing lights, huge high-tech video screens and any number of other blaring, flashing, noise-making contraptions that there are in existence. My wife's been to Times Square in New York and she said Las Vegas has far more flashing lights and video screens.

Las Vegas has a message and while there, we saw it worded any number of ways in various advertisements: “treat yourself,” “indulge yourself,” “today is your special day,” “do something for you,” “make yourself feel good,” “give in to your desires,” “what's your craving?” and the list goes on from now until infinite. I think the best way to sum it up is this: “whatever you think you want or want to do, take it or do it to the excess!” People have a lot of names for Las Vegas: “City of Sin”, “City of Lights” and many more, but above all else Las Vegas really is just a city of excess.

Every major building/hotel/casino has its own theme ranging from ancient Egypt and Rome to circuses, Hollywood and New York. Each of these themes draws from its source material and then compacts it all into one tight mass of glamorous flashy excess that would probably make its source material ashamed.

Sex is of course something almost everyone desires to indulge in and Las Vegas shows no less zeal for excess in this area than anywhere else. About 5 to 10 people per street corner are constantly standing around to hand out cards and invitations for any number of strip-teases, peep shows, and pornography subscriptions. A normal large city has rows of newspaper boxes, but Las Vegas has those boxes filled with pornography magazines.

The streets themselves are jam-packed with tourists and regulars. On a June weekday night, the Las Vegas Strip is more crowded than a major theme park on a summer Saturday. Still, we didn't feel in any danger and I think most people were just as overwhelmed with the constant sensory overload as we were.

And the thing is, Las Vegas has much to do. It may not be a place I'd want to live, but for a short visit, all this excess of glamor and luxury can be very impressive. Gambling may be the highlight for many people, but there is much else to do here that doesn't even have to cost you a dime.

To start with, many of the hotel/casinos along the strip aren't all that expensive to stay at. I'm assuming this is because they hope you'll choose to spend much more money gambling at their establishment, but it works out either way. This puts you right in the middle of everything that happens there and it gives you the chance to walk the strip rather than fighting the traffic looking in vain for parking.

And the strip's hotels are the source of most of Las Vegas' great free fun. As I said, every one of them is built off of a different theme so whether you're by yourself or even have kids with you, it's easy to find themed-hotels that everyone will enjoy. In terms of classical or European architecture, the Bellagio is by far the best with the Venetian at a close second.

One of the Strip's most celebrated gardens is in the Bellagio hotel where we found a spacious (though crowded with people) and neatly manicured garden themed off of Route 66 and the different regions of the United States. There's no charge to view it and while you're at the Bellagio, you definitely don't want to miss the Fountains out front.

During the daytime (starting at 3 PM weekdays and Noon on weekends) the Bellagio Fountains have a show every thirty minutes and in the evening the shows are every fifteen minutes. These are the same fountains that were featured in the movie, Ocean's 11. They're a fantastic sight, with tons of fountains constantly moving around, exploding in every direction and differing heights and set to the music of a different song for every show. Take my word for it, this is something you want to see at least once.

The Mirage hotel will probably be your favorite if you like nature and asymmetrical or natural styles in architecture. Here, they have a huge tropical fish-tank packed with fish and they even have a tropical rainforest growing indoors. Once again, there's no charge to see either of these. If you want, you can even eat a meal or have a drink in one of their restaurants that is located in/around the rainforest. The rest of hotel has very nice modern/organic style designs. Also, the Mirage has a volcano fountain in the front of the hotel that erupts every 15 minutes after 6 PM.

The MGM Grand's main theme is Hollywood/movies. This is where the famous Studio 54 club is located. They also have a Lion Habitat with full glass walls and a glass enclosure where people can walk into the middle of the Habitat, much like aquariums do with sharks. It's completely free.

The Treasure Island Hotel gives four free shows a night (5:30, 7:00, 8:30, and 10:00) titled, “The Sirens of TI.” They're located out front in the hotel's pirate bay facade. The best way to describe the show would be a pirate-themed pop music battle between a Brittany Spears-like group of girls (the Sirens) and a boy-band bunch of pirates. It showcases full-sized pirate ships that move through the “bay”, fire cannons, and even sink into the water. It's pretty impressive that the whole performance is free to the general public.

If you like chocolate, there is a four-storied M&M's store with every type of M&M merchandise you can think of as well as a free walk-through “factory” tour and 3-D video that's sure to impress kids. Although we didn't get the opportunity, the free Ethel M. Chocolate Factory tour is supposed to be quite a treat. Another thing that kids might like is the free circus acts at the Circus Circus Hotel near the end of the Strip. They usually run every half hour and range from juggling to trapeze and acrobatics.

If you are looking to gamble a little, just to get the Las Vegas experience, there's ways you can do that for free too. Most of the hotels offer free coupon books if you ask at the counter (or they just hand them to you at check-in). These coupon books generally include incentives to sign up for their special gambling club. Usually you can get $5 or even $10 of free slot play just for signing up for the club membership card (no fee) and giving an e-mail address. That should keep you busy for a while on the penny slot machines and you don't have to worry about losing any money. We actually made $15 that way.

Not everything free and fun in Las Vegas can be done in a day or even two. Here are some other shows we've heard are good but didn't get the chance to experience ourselves: Court Jester's Stage at Excalibur Hotel, Masquerade Village Sky Show at Rio Hotel (not on the Strip), Thunderstorm at the Aladdin Hotel, and the Atlantis Water Show in the Forum Shops at Caesar's. You can pick and choose based on your interests because there really are plenty.

Las Vegas is definitely the City of Excess. But all that excess can provide some free fun for a couple of days. Survive the heat, don't indulge yourself too much and enjoy a short trip to Las Vegas, Nevada!

Sure, you've been to Las Vegas before. You've stayed on the strip, dined in the buffets, gambled in the casinos and even took in a few shows. All of that is great, but you haven't really experienced our city until you've taken a tour of the historical parts of “old Las Vegas.” Print this guide and follow it to see some of the greatest parts of this bustling town.

Freemont Street is the true heart of old Las Vegas. Also known as “Downtown Las Vegas”, it is home to most of the older hotel casinos. During its revival, the Freemont Street Experience opened in 1995 in a successful bid to lure more tourists away from the mega resorts of the strip. A trip through “glitter gulch” as it was once named, will draw your attention to the multimedia experience that dances above you on Freemont Street. It takes a bit more knowledge to dig deeper and recognize the history before you. For example, the Golden Gate Casino Hotel (located at One Freemont Street) is the oldest casino, with the actual building having been in the same location since 1906 (its name has changed and it was closed for renovations for a short time.) Also, make sure to swing by the El Cortez, the oldest continuously operating casino in Vegas, having remained open at the same location since 1941.

Vegas Vic

This cigarette smoking, hand waving, 40 feet tall cowboy had a recording that said a friendly “Howdy, Pardner!” every 15 minutes from it's perch atop the Pioneer Club in 1951. In 1966 actor Lee Marvin complained that the cowboy's greeting was too loud so Vic was silenced until the 1980's. The arm stopped waving in 1991. He has appeared in many movies including Diamonds are Forever and Casino. Today, he is once again silent, but remains in the same spot above Freemont Street, protected by the Neon Museum. Vegas Vic is at 25 E. Fremont St. along the Fremont Street Experience.

The Neon Museum

The goal of the Neon Museum is to preserve a huge legacy of Las Vegas - the signs that adorned the long gone relics of our past. Saved from Las Vegas's favorite “cleansing method” of demolition, these signs have been restored to their former glory and placed throughout the Freemont Street Experience. (Vegas Vic was one such benefactor.) The Neon Museum provides those interested with a self guided walking tour to see what they have been up to. Currently exhibited are the Hacienda Horse and Rider (originally installed in 1967), Aladdin's Lamp (originally installed in 1966), The Flame Restaurant sign (originally installed in 1961) and Dot's Flowers (originally installed in 1949). There are many others, and the website provides the location of each relic.

Protected in the Neon Boneyard are signs dating back to the 1930's that have been rescued but not restored. Tours are offered by appointment only and are $15 per person. To book an appointment call 702-387-NEON (6336).

The Neon Museum has formed a partnership with the Old Mormon Fort in which they are able to display some of the signs until the museum can. Currently displayed there are the Silver Slipper sign and part of the Sahara's original sign.

Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort Historic Park

The fort is the oldest inhabited building in Nevada. It was constructed by Mormon missionaries in 1855. In the park you'll find the original adobe fort used by the first non-native settlers to Las Vegas. The Fort is located at 500 E. Washington Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89101. Call (702) 486-3511 for info.

Las Vegas Springs Preserve

The Nevada Springs once brought fresh water to the surface of the desert, creating a source of water for the Native American tribes that inhabited the area. The city of Las Vegas was established around the natural oasis (or cienega), where lush green meadows were prominent in the desert. The name Las Vegas means “the meadows” in Spanish, the name given by early settlers here. Due to over use (pumping to support the growing city) the water stopped reaching the surface after 1962. It is now the site of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, a project designed to bring awareness of Las Vegas' past and the importance of water preservation. The site is also home to the Nevada State Museum (opening 2009.) The Preserve is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily. Trails close at dusk or 6 p.m. (whichever comes first). The Preserve is located at 333 S. Valley View Blvd. in Las Vegas (between US 95 and Alta Drive.) Purchase tickets online or by calling 702-822-7768.

Visitors to Las Vegas are blinded by all the glitz and glamour, so they miss the great history of the town. Old Las Vegas is definitely a sight to behold, so use this as your guide to a memorable trip back in time.

Whether traveling to Las Vegas or being a current state resident, it is almost a foregone conclusion that at some point you are going to want to experience the nightlife scene. Because Las Vegas prides itself in being the city that never sleeps, a good starting point to examine in looking for fun are the clubs. So where to start?

The Club Rio is, as the name suggests, in the Rio Hotel about mid-way down The Strip at 3700 West Flamingo Road. The first thing everyone wants to know are the costs included in having a good time. At Club Rio local women have a free cover charge, while out of state female attendees pay $10. Men require a flat cover charge of $20. When looking into the drinking costs, you can expect that their mixed drinks are going to be $5 and above, while wine will hover around the $4.25 range at minimum. Beer starts at $3.75.

So, what to wear? Like most nightclubs, particularly prominent ones in Las Vegas, there is a dress code. Jeans, sandals, sneakers and shorts are strictly prohibited, while men also must have collared shirts.

As far as scheduling and events go, Club Rio's working hours on Thursdays are 11p.m.-4a.m., while on Friday and Saturday it opens half past 11p.m. and closes at its normal hour. If you arrive after 11p.m. any of these three nights you can expect quite a wait in line, so as is usually the case for going out with a big group, arrive early. On Fridays and Saturdays one can expect DJ music, whereas every Thursday is 'Latin Libido Night.'

Because Club Rio's clientele range from adults 25-35 years of age, you can expect a stylish, spicy and sexy experience within its walls. It is well known to be a huge haven for the singles crowd, with plenty of people to mingle with and numerous beautiful cocktail waitresses serving your liquor needs. Laser lights mosaic in pattern and video panels create a stellar atmosphere for all to enjoy, and there are specific seating areas for casino players.

Overall Club Rio is a terrific place to socialize and enjoy music that is certainly ear opening but not altogether deafening. Located near the Masquerade Village, it is an experience that is unrivaled in Las Vegas nightlife and a benchmark of personal and group entertainment with locals and visitors alike. The huge and inviting dance floor awaits you.

When most people think of Las Vegas, a conference for training the world's top executives is probably the last thought on their mind. While it may not be the first item to come to mind, that is exactly what will be happening in Las Vegas this Summer, as Elite Exec Ed hosts their first Summit for Corporate Executives later this Summer.

Could Las Vegas become the Harvard of the West? That is the question posed by Elite Exec Ed when they announced the formal plans for their first executive training seminar to be held in Las Vegas this August. Elite Exec Ed, founded by Steven Phelan, a Professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), is an executive education company based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The company strives to bring the newest ideas from a number of acclaimed universities under one roof, for a business education convention put together for the most elite executives driving corporate America today. The conference put together by Elite Exec Ed is comprised of the best executive programs offered by the professors of the nation's leading business schools, such as Harvard, Wharton and Kellogg.

In a press release issued by Elite Exec Ed, founder Steven Phelan stated, “We are not locked in to the perspective of just one school or one mode of thinking - our emphasis is on bringing the latest and greatest ideas from the world's best business schools.”

With other executive development conferences, it is not uncommon for a participant to find themselves being one of a thousand other individuals cramped into a crowded auditorium. What sets Elite Exec Ed's event apart from others is that enrollment is limited to just 25 elite executives. This provides a level of one-on-one instruction for participants that no other seminar can match.

“Many events that feature well known speakers charge thousands of dollars for attendees to passively sit in a theater with thousands of others,” comments Phelan. “We have explicitly designed our event to encourage two-way interaction with the speakers, and attendees are openly invited to raise issues of importance to them and their companies”.

With only 25 seats available, event organizers expect the conference to fill up quickly. Registration to the executive training program will include three nights accommodation at the Signature at MGM Grand, as well as gourmet breakfasts and lunches. All materials required for participation in the event are also supplied.

Additional information on attending the event, scheduled for August 22-24, can be obtained online at www.eliteexeced.com

Elvis may be known as the King of Rock n' Roll, but he is certainly the King of Las Vegas too. At a time when Vegas was considered a wasteland for has-been entertainers and the crowds were much older, Las Vegas was of course the place to gamble and see the elaborate showgirls. When Elvis decided to perform regularly in Vegas back in 1969 little did he know he would eventually make it one of the most popular destinations in the world for travelers and entertainers alike, spawning cottage industries of Elvis impersonators, Flying Elvis', and Elvis-style wedding chapels.

Here now is a guide that will take you on a cinematic tour of Las Vegas based on Elvis-themed movies. One of them stars Elvis Presley, the man himself, in a lavish musical with songs, dances, and girls. Another is a hilarious comedy that will have you laughing from start to finish focusing at times on the various tribute artists for Elvis. Lastly, the third film is based on a heist of a Las Vegas hotel from a member of a gang who believes he is Elvis's illegitimate son. Each of these Elvis films highlight points of interests for you to see and visit.

Viva Las Vegas - Elvis Presley & Ann-Margret (1964)

One of Elvis' most popular films by his legion of fans, it's now considered one of his most iconic films. The theme song has become synonymous with references to Las Vegas, even to this day. You can hear it in a TV commercial for viagra, with slight changes of lyrics. In the opening of this film you hear Elvis sing his famous song as you get a glorious aerial view of the bright neon lights that are actually of downtown Las Vegas as well as some of the hotels along the Strip. Self-guided walking tours are easy by simply walking along the Fremont Street Experience in downtown. There you can see for yourself the incredible light show from each of these hotels.

Viva Las Vegas is also famous for the captivating chemistry, on and off-screen, of Elvis and his lovely co-star, Ann-Margret. After their initial meeting on-screen Elvis and his rival race car driver buddy go on a wild goose chase looking for her thinking she's a showgirl at one of the hotels along the strip. Actually her character is a swim instructor teaching children at a lavish Las Vegas hotel whose swimming pool is enormous and state-of-the-art. There is a magnificent scene of Elvis and Ann-Margret up in a helicopter looking down on Hoover Dam and Lake Mead as she gives him some very impressive trivia on these popular tourist sights just outside Las Vegas. The film has a talent contest between the two and Elvis driving in a riveting road race. Naturally it ends very romantically.

Honeymoon in Vegas - Nicolas Cage, Sarah Jessica Parker, & James Caan (1992)

This has to be one of the funniest movies ever made. I could not stop laughing over its crazy storyline. It's about a young couple, Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker, who decide to go to Las Vegas for the weekend to get married right away. They stay in a very opulent honeymoon suite at the Bally's hotel during an Elvis Impersonators Convention. Cage's character, however, has a weakness for playing poker. He gets hoodwinked into playing an extremely high stakes game with a well known professional gambler, played brilliantly by James Caan. When Cage loses he now owes $65,000. He can absolve the debt under one condition, his fiancé.

The story gets crazier as has his fiancé is now with the professional gambler at his romantic beach home on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Cage comes to the rescue as he heads to Hawaii to get his fiancé back. After a lot of mishaps and manipulations stemming from Caan, he just missed the two of them as they headed back to Las Vegas. Cage finally makes it back to the mainland where he miraculously hitches a ride on an old-fashioned propeller plane with a bunch of Elvis impersonators to Las Vegas. Little does he realize they won't be landing at their destination in the conventional way. After all these are the Flying Elvis', Utah Chapter, he's with. Thankfully the loving couple is then reunited. It ends with the happy couple and the Flying Elvis's at a wedding chapel.

3000 Miles to Graceland - Kevin Costner & Kurt Russell (2001)

While the first two films are light romantic comedies this one is anything but that. It's the story of two masterminds, played by Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell, and their band of recruits who plan on robbing the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Their disguise is to dress up as Elvis impersonators, so they can blend in with the crowd after they commit their brilliant heist. As they are en route to Las Vegas by car you begin to see flashes of rapid images of the famed Las Vegas Strip at night in all its over-the-top glory. While watching the “blink of an eye” imagery of the Strip you hear this electronic incidental music that's pulsating, energetic, and rhythmic.

Once they arrive at the hotel the film does a great job of showcasing the numerous clichés that are associated heavily with Vegas: the patrons who think they'll strike it rich at the slot machines, Elvis impersonators abound , scantily-clad showgirl floor show, an opulent hotel, and security cameras everywhere on the patrons at all times. Even though the scenes in Las Vegas are a small portion of the film it still makes a big impression. The extreme violence that ensues when the heist goes horribly awry merely drives the point home that Las Vegas always has been and still is about glitz, glamour, and glitterati.
